Advanced Dental Concepts, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

Last week, we blogged about the need to screen for gum and heart disease during the month of February, also known as "America's Heart Month." Well, February is also synonymous with National Children’s Dental Health Month, and the team at Advanced Dental Concepts is here to tell you about the need for preventative oral care in kids.

For 60 Februaries, the American Dental Association, or ADA, has sponsored National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. National Children's Dental Health Month began as a one-day event in 1941 in a Cleveland clinic. Forty years later, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Each February, Drs. Faulkner and Spurlock, as well as thousands of American dental professionals, focus on the preventive oral care of our children. Advanced Dental Concepts wants you to remember developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Has your child visited Advanced Dental Concepts the past six months? If not, it’s time to give us a call at (850) 304-0027 and schedule an appointment!

February is Heart Month, from Advanced Dental Concepts

Did you know February is Heart Month? It’s a great time to take good stock of the health of your heart, say Drs. Faulkner and Spurlock. Cardiovascular disease remains American's No.1 killer, claiming more lives than the rest of major causes of death, according to the American Heart Association. Studies have shown a correlation between gum disease and heart disease, underscoring the importance of good oral health care.

Visiting our office regularly can help prevent gum disease or at least catch it in its early stages. And because people with dental insurance are more likely to visit a dentist, a healthy mouth begins with a visit to Advanced Dental Concepts. In observance of Heart Month, our team says it’s also important to know your numbers: blood pressure (less than 120/80), cholesterol (less than 200) and BMI (less than 25). If you have any questions about heart health, or about your treatment at Advanced Dental Concepts, please give us a call today.

At Advanced Dental Concepts, take the “OUCH” out of cold drinks & ice cream!

Do you say “no thanks” when someone offers you a glass of iced tea or lemonade? And skip the sundae when you take the kids for ice cream? All because your teeth just hurt too much when they encounter something cold? If so, you’re not alone. Cold sensitivity like that is a complaint dentists hear frequently. Even if the pain lasts just a moment it makes it hard to enjoy the foods and drinks you love.

A Simple Explanation

There may be a simple reason for the pain you feel (in otherwise healthy teeth) when you eat or drink something cold — or even go out into the cold air. The crown of your tooth (the part you see) is covered in nice hard enamel — but the root doesn’t enjoy that kind of protection. In fact, it’s covered with a substance called “cementum.” The cementum is considerably softer than enamel, and can become quite permeable as we age. A healthy tooth has nerves which run from the outer cementum directly to the inner tooth pulp.

As long as your gums are at the proper level they cover the cementum. But when gums recede — as a result of improper brushing, acid reflux or periodontal (gum) disease — the cementum is left unprotected. So when you eat or drink something cold — OUCH.

Instant Relief

Fortunately, today there’s a simple way to get instant relief — a special protective invisible bonding liquid that we can apply to the root to protect your cementum and eliminate the tooth’s sensitivity. Although it doesn’t work for everyone the vast majority of people are delighted to find they can go back to enjoying all the frozen desserts and ice-cold drinks they’ve been avoiding.

Results

If you’d like to try this treatment, simply tell our team at Advanced Dental Concepts at your next visit, or give us a call.

We’ll apply it, and then test to see if it’s worked for you. Then you can say good-bye to the ouch and hello to ice cream, icy cold drinks and other treats you’ve been missing. Stop putting up with the pain. Give us a call or come in and speak with our team today.

The second annual Dentistry From The Heart at Advanced Dental Concepts

On Friday, April 30, the team at Advanced Dental Concepts will host the second annual Dentistry From The Heart, a day that we will offer free smiles to anyone who needs dental work. It was a huge success last year and we are hoping to be able to serve as many this year. Last year, our team treated more than 200 people.

Dentistry From The Heart (DFTH) is a national non-profit organization with a simple mission-making people smile. Founded in 2001 by Dr. Vincent Monticciolo located in New Port Richey, Florida, DFTH was created to aid those in need, including the growing population of under-insured Americans.

The event will take place April 30th at our office in Pace. Starting at 8am, Drs. Spurlock, Faulkner and Faulkner and their volunteers will treat the first 150 patients, or however many they can treat by 5pm. We will be providing free fillings, extractions and cleanings on a first come, first serve basis to adults over 18 years old.

For more information, please visit www.AdvancedDentalConceptsinc.com or the organization’s national website at www.DentistryFromTheHeart.org.
